Addictions 3.0

This is a pretty film and music heavy month for us. Here are a few things we just can’t get off our brains. We’re okay with these kinds of addictions.

1. Chelsea Does

I have never been the biggest fan of Chelsea Handler. It’s not that I don’t agree with her politics or her comedy doesn’t get through to me. In fact, I don’t really have a reason why I wasn’t on the Handler bandwagon. Until now. Chelsea Does kind of snuck up on me. One day it was just there! On the front page of my Netflix feed and on a whim I started it up. In this four-part series Chelsea Handler explores the themes of marriage, technology, racism, and drugs as they pertain to her life as a single 40-year-old comedienne. I’ve seen doc series like these before, but it’s with a fresh look through Handler’s lens she tells it even more so like it is including having to bear through her father’s sex stories. That’s just the first episode too.

2. @chivexp

Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki is one of the greats. Time will continue to show that. He has been a cinematographer on 40+ projects and is aimed at a three-peat win of Best Achievement in Cinematography on February 28th. His recent installment of visual glory takes place in Alejandro G. Innaritu’s The Revenant. I’ve already seen this film twice in theatres and can’t wait for a third showing. In fact, I’ll probably go tonight! The film is a masterpiece entirely shot in natural light during the harsh Canadian winter. Chivo has been an avid instagrammer for several years now. His images come from his sets and the photo shoots he does on occasion. His work is primarily focused on faces in which he shoots with a deep focus. They are breathtaking. So, in between your friends’ pictures of food and pets you may find one of Chivo’s pieces scrolling through your feed. Give it a follow!

3. This Gif

Have a look. Because politics have turned into a clown show for the most part and this made me laugh away the pain.

4. A Song For You: The Austin City Limits Story

Austin City Limits has been a staple of the music community for over forty years now and finally someone is telling their story! Watch the trailer here. I’ve been watching these programs for years. Some of my personal favorites have been Radiohead, The Swell Season (ft. Daniel Johnston), Ryan Adams, and Jack White. The documentary will have its premiere next month during the 29th annual SXSW Film Festival in the most appropriate city it could premiere! Follow the journey and look for local screenings on their website.

5. Naughty by Nature’s 25th Anniversary EP

Yes, yes, yes, and hell yes I want this to happen! Naughty by Nature has been a staple in the hip-hop community for a quarter of a century. They’ve been handling other peoples p***y and celebrating with a few hip hop hoorays and it’s time for some new material. They’re looking to raise $100,000 and they’ve got our attention! Cool?
